In addition to his eponymous label, Joel is one-third of the no-holds-barred wine trio behind Three Thieves, and he also produces Shatter, a French Grenache. In 1996, Joel released a widely revered Zinfandel out of Amador County, and Joel Gott Wines was born. With the help of his winemaker wife Sarah, Joel made a conscious choice to source fruit from all over California to blend phenomenal vineyard sites into complex, layered wines-at a refreshingly accessible price. More than 25 years ago, when he and his brother owned the Palisades Market-a boutique food and wine shop in Calistoga-Joel got an unparalleled education in the wine industry. Most recently, Charles co-founded the Gotham Project, the largest producer and seller of wines in keg for wine-on-tap service in the U.S. In addition to adventures with his fellow thieves, Charles partners with Joel Gott on Shatter, a Grenache from Maury, France. He later launched a joint venture with renowned winemaker Charles Smith to craft rosé from Washington State under the Charles & Charles label.

Twenty years ago, when Americans perceived all rosé as sweet wine for the unrefined palate, Charles rode around the U.S. His early days in the wine business were spent at his family’s Provence estate, Chateau Routas, an acclaimed producer of red wine and rosé. A wine innovator and explorer, Charles Bieler fuses an uncanny ability to spot an opening before it materializes with an intrinsic knack for turning two or three outrageous propositions into a single winner.
